POP WiTCH : Ten KickAss Witchy Books & Movies To Brighten Your Day...

This morning, I posted this HAPPY PALM-READiNG SUNDAY message on Facebook in honor of a quirky lil' tradition Ellen Dugan started with her friends one year on Palm Sunday. I thought their idea was so deliciously irreverent that I just had to share... sorry, Mom!

Anyway, in the comment section of that post, my friend, Jenn, asked if I would list my top ten cute, fun magickal books & movies, and I was more than pleased to oblige, because I LOVE cute, fun magickal books & movies!

So- here they are, in no particular order, my picks for 10 Kickass Witchy Books & Movies To Brighten Your Day :

Chocolat by Joanne Harris - Both the book & movie are wonderfully magickal, but they are different enough that you can enjoy them each as it's own separate thing. Of course, the movie has Johnny Depp going for it, but- when it comes down to it... the book is a bit more witchy.

Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman - Again, I recommend checking out both the movie and the book. They are each entertaining yet different enough to stand on their own. What you won't get in the book are the charmingly quirky performances by Stockard Channing & Dianne Wiest (two kickass actresses) or a peak at their delightfully witchy home, which is, by far, my favorite part of the movie.

Anything by Ellen Dugan - Ellen Dugan is a practicing witch & a prolific author. She also happens to be funny as hell and refreshingly down to earth. I favor her book Natural Witchery, which was my first Dugan read, but Seasons Of Witchery, which I mentioned in the video, is great, too. It takes you through the Wheel Of The Year, season by season, and is chock full of interesting tidbits & tips for celebrating each sabbat.

Cait Johnson's Witch In The Kitchen - This is another book that takes you season by season through the Wheel Of The Year, but it's focus is on food, vegetarian food, to be specific, and the ways in which you can make your kitchen the magickal center of your home. Cait Johnson is a lovely writer and this book is like a cozy cup of the yummiest tea!

Witch Among Us : The Autobiography Of A Witch by Lois Bourne - This autobiography is my most recent love & Lois Bourne is one fascinating woman! I seriously could not put this book down & reread each chapter a couple of times. I suppose what hooked me was the fact that she was a gifted psychic in addition to being a practicing "white witch" (her term), and I was spell-bound by the various anecdotes she shared about using her magick to help friends & strangers alike.

A Discovery Of Witches - I've already mentioned this Deborah Harkness novel here on the blog, but that's because it's awesome! It's the first in a trilogy of three, and, if you love old libraries, yoga, magick & tea (vampires anyone?), you will most certainly enjoy this fantastical read.

The Witches Of Eastwick - Sure, the script falls to pieces in the end, but who cares when you've got Michelle Pfieffer, Cher & Susan Sarandon witching it up with some very big hair & the oh so devilish Jack Nicholson?!

Brida by Paolo Coehlo - This is a book that I don't hear mentioned very often, but it has it's own quiet charm. It's about the initiation of a young Irish woman into the world of witchcraft, and I found it at just the right moment in my life, a moment when I, much like Brida, went looking for magick... real magick & found it!

The NeverEnding Story - This movie from the 80s might look a bit dated by today's standards, but it's spiritual messages are timeless & come wrapped in an epic story that is endlessly magickal!

Solitary Witch by Silver Ravenwolf - Silver Ravenwolf is a controversial writer with more than her fair share of haters, which mainly derives from her focus on teenagers & the way some people feel she has encouraged them to practice magick with or without their parent's approval. Still, Solitary Witch is a book you will find on many a witchy shelf & that's because it's undeniably fun. It's like a gigantic encyclopedia of magick & you can basically flip to any random page & start reading from there. I like to bring it along on long road trips for entertainment.
