BOOK NERD : Kickass Quotes From Revolution From Within - A Book Of Self Esteem by Gloria Steinem

Revolution From Within is a book I've read more than once and have continually dipped into over the years. It always leaves me feeling strong, empowered and ready to take on the world.

It's the best book I've read on the subject of self-esteem, which is why I included it in the resource section for HiPPiE WiTCH : Peace, Love & All That Good Shit and why I still flip through it when I need a quick boost of confidence.

It is not a cutesy read. It is as thoughtful and challenging as it's author, Gloria Steinem, and it's take on self-esteem as revolutionary underscores the fact that investing in this aspect of yourself will affect all others...

"Each of us has an inner compass that helps us know where to go and what to do. It's signals are interest, excitement, the joy of understanding for it's own sake, and the sort of fear that is a sign of being in new territory- and therefore of growth... Honoring and following these internal signals is itself the beginning of the journey." -Gloria Steinem

"There is always one true inner voice. Trust it." -Gloria Steinem

"The human mind can imagine both how to break self-esteem and how to nurture it- and imagining anything is the first step toward creating it. Believing in a true self is what allows a true self to be born." -Gloria Steinem

"We may emerge from times of traumatic worthlessness and low self-esteem with an increased immunity to similar assaults, a stronger sense of ourselves, and a better defense against future challenges. It is a law of nature that matter transforms itself: Nothing is destroyed. For us as part of nature: Nothing is wasted." -Gloria Steinem

"We are the universe in microcosm; the universe is each of us in macrocosm. If we have respect for one, how can we fail to have respect for the other?" -Gloria Steinem

"Just as each cell contains our whole being, so each thought and dream contains our whole self, too. If our dreams weren't already within us, we could not even dream them." -Gloria Steinem

"The truth is that, like every other part of nature, human beings have an internal imperative to grow. With enough sun and water to put down deep roots of self-esteem, children can withstand terrible storms. Without them, the slightest wind will seem full of danger." -Gloria Steinem

"But somewhere within each of us, buried at varying depths depending on the age and degree of neglect or abuse, shame or coercion we endured, there is a resistant, daydreaming, rebellious, creative, unique child- a true self who is waiting." -Gloria Steinem

"She sometime feels that her years as a man junkie took irreplaceable time away from her music, and wonders what women could be if, as she puts it, 'we stopped taking care of men so they will take care of us- and put the same amount of time into taking care of ourselves.'" -Gloria Steinem

"The heart once symbolized female power. It was a procreative genital symbol; the female version of the phallic symbol. Though trivialized into romance and deprived of it's power by centuries of patriarchy the heart still belongs to us." -Gloria Steinem

"If feelings of unworthiness are rooted in our bodies, we need to start there." -Gloria Steinem

"Only becoming conscious of old and unchosen patterns allows us to change them, and even so, change, no matter how much for the better, still feels cold and lonely at first- as if we're out there on the edge of the universe with the wind whistling past our ears- because it doesn't feel like home. Old patterns, no matter how negative and painful they may be, have an incredible magnetic power- because they do feel like home." -Gloria Steinem

"I've saved until last the most amazing property of the unconscious: it's timelessness. It is this property that allows us not only to retrieve the past, but to reshape it: to go back to a place of pain or deprivation and alter the way it affects us... Precisely because past emotions and events are stored timelessly, we can enter that realm of the unconscious and reprocess them." -Gloria Steinem

"You can't lose old and negative ways of thinking until new and positive ones replace them." -Gloria Steinem
